Taking its cue from the analysis of the Rebel’s Prayer of Teresio Olivelli and a varied corpus of partisan prayers, this essay aims to explore the changes in the relationship between faith and violence in the struggle for liberation. While devotion and the direct conversation with God were considered a safe refuge in the face of the atrocities of the conflict, after the 8th of September they also represented a form of self-determination of the conscience vis-à-vis the decision to take up arms against the invader. In the post-war period this evolution was downscaled by the reinterpretation of the ‘rebellion for love’ in the perspective of unarmed martyrdom that, in effect, not only simplified the historic complexity of Olivelli, but also curtailed the debate on the spirituality of the Resistance.

Abstract
Taking its cue from the analysis of the Rebel’s Prayer of Teresio Olivelli and a varied corpus of partisan prayers, this essay aims to explore the changes in the relationship between faith and violence in the struggle for liberation. While devotion and the direct conversation with God were considered a safe refuge in the face of the atrocities of the conflict, after the 8th of September they also represented a form of self-determination of the conscience vis-à-vis the decision to take up arms against the invader. In the post-war period this evolution was downscaled by the reinterpretation of the ‘rebellion for love’ in the perspective of unarmed martyrdom that, in effect, not only simplified the historic complexity of Olivelli, but also curtailed the debate on the spirituality of the Resistance.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
