Abstract
The best practices of Muslims against radicalization in Europe do not seem to attract the interest of the media, while the news overflow with stories on Muslim radicalization. Yet the activities of Muslim communities to contrast the phenomenon of radicalization are intense and recognized by the national and eu institutions. The A. who is studying Muslim commu- nities in marginalized areas in Europe and carries out a project with Muslim community leaders engaged in prevention and contrast to radicalization, in her essay explores various practices in different areas: from Molenbeek to Manchester, to Rome, Berlin, Milan. What emerges is that the role of communities is fundamental and that it is important to de-construct the mythological equation – that produces dangerous deviations such as islamophobia – that social gatherings of Muslims result in radicalization. The A. proposes a new interpretive mod- el based on the identification of variables that define profile, composition and dynamics of Muslim communities in Europe and Muslim diasporic communities. Case studies such as Femyso (Forum of European Muslim Youth and Student Organisations), gmi (Giovani Musul- mani d’Italia), Karame and others, become exemplary in defining the current Muslim social-po- litical scenario in Europe, in particular as regards the Muslim youth. Many are the challenges that Muslim youth organizations must face: from media manipulation, to internal dynamics, to the de-construction of prejudices and other. Muslim organizations and communities de- velop new forms of urban resilience that are based on a sound and productive interpretation of civil society potentials at social and political level.
